WORLD RISK ADAPTATION FUTURES
SOCIAL PROTECTION WEBINAR
As part of the Summer Academy on World Risk and Adaptation Futures programme, UNU-EHS and its partners are hosting a series of webinars on social protection.
MCII’s Executive Director Soenke Kreft, Board Member Thomas Loster, and member Koko Warner will be speaking on the webinar panel “Social protection as a tool to address climate change and sustainable development – from reactive to proactive social protection” during the 09 September Webinar.
Social protection is traditionally seen from the lenses of poverty alleviation, food security, employment adjustments and protecting people from falling back into poverty. While much remains to be done in this regard, emerging vulnerability and exposure to climate change need our utmost attention as well. Various factors that enhance vulnerability to poverty and food insecurity also cut across the drivers and impacts of climate change. There is a growing need to readjust our social protection policies and programmes to incorporate the unfolding and perceived realities of climate change. However, the uncertainties regarding climate change and its enormous range from slow onset events (such as decline in precipitation) to sudden events (such as drought) mean creating additional flexibility around the social protection mechanisms and broadening their horizon.
